Personal life and education

Sharman belongs to a Gujarati family of actors and performing artists. His father , sister and cousins hold prominent careers in Gujarati theater. His sister, Mansi Joshi stars in many television serials. His sister is married to TV host and actor Rohit Roy who is the brother of TV actor Ronit Roy. Sharman is married to Prerna Chopra, daughter of veteran actor Prem Chopra. The couple have a baby girl, Khyana, born on 12 October 2005. They were blessed with the birth of twin baby boys, Rehan and Varryan, in July 2009.

Film career

He made his film debut in the 1999 art film Godmother and received rave reviews for his portrayal of the title protagonist’s troubled son.

This was followed by Style (2001), which was a comedy and a surprise commercial hit. It was a low budget project produced by N Chandra involving a cast of newcomers. The movie was set in a college following the antics of a couple of students. Sharman’s comic timing and performance was generally lauded and was considered the main reason for the success of the movie. The success of Style was followed with a sequel called Xcuse Me (2003), borrowing its name from the hit song of the first film, and other comedies like Shaadi No. 1 (2005).

The 2006 critically acclaimed film Rang De Basanti brought him favourable reviews, both for his comic and emotional segments in the movie and considered to be his breakthrough role. Later that year he starred in the comedy film Golmaal which was a moderate box office success. In 2007 he appeared in the multi-starrer film Life in a Metro which was a success at the box office and the multi-starrer comedy Dhol which did moderately well. The following year saw him as the character Shyam in Hello, the film adaptation of Chetan Bhagat’s novel One Night @ the Call Center. While the movie had a good opening week at the box office, it received mixed to negative reviews from critics. Sharman also played the lead male role of Siddharth in the film Sorry Bhai! in 2008, which did not do well at the box office.

Sharman played a major role in the multi-starrer 3 Idiots with Aamir Khan and Madhavan, which is loosely inspired by yet another Chetan Bhagat novel, Five Point Someone and also is his most successful movie to date. He is also set to star in the movies Toh Baat Paki and Allah Ke Banday that year.
