Career

Acting career & Beyond

was one of the top Bollywood film stars in the 1970s and 1980s. He began his career by playing villainous roles and was immensely successful in portraying stylised villains such as the one in the movie Raampur Ka Lakshman.

He then switched over to playing the protagonist (main lead) with Subhash Ghai’s Kalicharan and was even more successful in solo starrers as well as multi-starrers.

He also starred in the Punjabi movies Putt Jattan De & Sat Sri Akal.

Apart from having an illustrious career as an actor playing different roles. He also has also sung many of his songs on screen for films like Kashmakash, Dost and Do Naari among many others.

Shatru was selected by Rediff as one of the most unconventional actors in Hindi Cinema (the others being Ajay Devgan, Amitabh Bachchan, Irfan Khan, Rajnikant, Shahrukh Khan, and Sunil Shetty). He is known for his powerful screen presence.

In 2008, He judged The Great Indian Laughter Challenge show, Season 4 on-aired on STAR One tv. He was second Judge of the show and famous Cricketer & Politician Navjot Singh Sidhu is the main Judge.

On 3 October 2009, appeared on Sony Entertainment Television Asia Show Dus Ka Dum Season 2 hosted by Salman Khan with Actress Hema Malini for a Special Episode. He appeared on the request of Salman Khan.

He has recently been roped to play the role of former Andhra Pradesh chief minister N.T. Rama Rao in the Hindi version of Ram Gopal Varma’s upcoming bilingual film Rakha Charitra. He removed mustache for the first time in his 20 plus years film career.

Political career

Inspired by Jai Prakash Narayan a respected politician from Bihar, he decided to enter politics.

While he was at the peak of his acting career, in the mid-1980s, he chose to join an opposition party, the Bharatiya Janata Party, which was then a fledgling party with just two Members of Parliament. He faced many obstacles in his political career due to this and his attempts to do social work in Bihar were often obstructed by the ruling party at that time. His attempt to organise entertainment mega events with the help of film personalities from Mumbai to raise money for important social causes were stopped time and again under one false pretext or the other.

Sinha is considered one of the most successful actor politician of India, having made history by being the first member of the film fraternity to become a cabinet minister with the Government of India. He has held two portfolios, the department of health, and the department of shipping. He is still a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party and campaigns for the party all over India and is well known as a leader of the masses and a brilliant orator. As of May 2006, he has been appointed as the head of the BJP Culture and Arts Department.

Sinha won the Indian general election, 2009 from Patna Saheb in Bihar by defeating his nearest rival, Mr.Sahu of RJD.
